BIOMEDICALDEVICES/INSTRUMENTS491DB - Interproximal Cavitation Detection Device and Method. The invention is a disposable, single-use tape for detecting cavitated lesions on the interproximal surfaces between teeth. On the side of the tape that contacts the suspect tooth surface is a layer of an impressionable material. When the tape is pulled against the suspect tooth surface, an impression of that surface is formed, including any cavitation. [more] 367LM - Multiple Biopsy Device with Spiral Cutting Element. This flexible tubular device combines the sample collecting and storing functions in a single mechanism and operator control, which permits a more compact device that is significantly easier to use than existing ones. The spiral cutting action automatically moves the sample away from the collection port, making way for another sample to be collected. In this manner, the samples are separated from each other and their identity is preserved, unlike what happens with most current designs. The device is intended primarily for use in conjunction with standard flexible endoscopes. [more] 176TS - Perfluorocarbon Carrier for the Removal of Gas or Debris from Body Cava. The invention provides for a method for the removal of gas emboli and pockets as well as debris in body cava, notably the bowel. [more] 298GP - Tropomyosin-1 Antibodies for Early-Stage Cancer Detection. TM1 has been identified as a tumor suppressor protein present in normal tissues, but is absent in malignant tissue. TM1 has been discovered to be a biomarker in the early stages of cancer, including breast and prostate cancers. Specific TM1 antibodies can be used as reagents for detecting such early stage cancerous cells. [more] 204LK - Rapid Imaging of Pulmonary Emboli and Deep-Vein Thrombi with Radiolabelled Disintegrins. The radiolabelled polypeptides of the invention, similar to those derived from the Viperidae disintegrins, are useful as imaging agents for the detection of venous and arterial thrombi, pulmonary emboli and tumors or abscesses with a thrombus component. They offer significant advantages over other imaging agents because of the low target-to-background ratios which result from their high affinity for thrombi and emboli and from their rapid clearance from the blood circulation. Pulmonary emboli, which were previously difficult or impossible to detect, are readily detected with these agents because of the lower background emission from the liver. [more] DRUG DELIVERY311CK - Perforated Coated Tablet for 24-Hour Zero-Order Drug Release. Although various forms of perforated tablets coated with an impermeable layer have been previously disclosed, none is capable of zero-order drug delivery over extended periods. This technology uses standard polymers (including HPMC and PEO) in tablets capable of 24-hour zero-order delivery for both low and high solubility drugs. For example, tablets of this type can be made to have the same drug delivery profiles as Procardia XL® (nifedipine, which is highly insoluble) or Volmax®(albuterol sulfate, which is highly soluble), both of which are based on osmotic pump designs. [more] 289RF - Triple-Layer Tablets for 24-Hour Zero-Order Drug Release. The barrier layers swell and erode faster than the middle drug-containing layer, and thus increase the delivery surface area much more substantially as the drug is being depleted from the middle layer. Standard polymers (including HPMC and PEO) are used throughout. [more] 239TS - All-Aqueous Microcapsular Delivery System. The microcapsules are prepared at the interface of two aqueous phases, which eliminates even the slightest exposure to organic solvents. This system is suitable for the protection and/or sustained release of a wide variety of easily denatured biological materials: Live viruses (vaccines, gene therapy), live bacteria (vaccines), live cells (e.g., for insuline production), DNA, enzymes, hemoglobin, etc. [more] 093TS - Aqueous Core Microcapsular Delivery System. While it shares most of the advantages of the system of Ref. No. 053TS, this system reverses the normal use of the two phases in the manufacturing process: Here, droplets of an aqueous phase containing the drug are dispersed into a bulk organic phase. This system is suitable for molecules, such as DNA fragments, that are easily denatured but do not require the all-aqueous system of Ref. No. 239TS. 053TS - Organic Core Microcapsular Delivery System. This high-efficiency system is easy to scale up with standard equipment, does not subject materials to high pressure or high shear, and can be implemented at room temperature or below. The capsules can be made, with a narrow size distribution, in any size from 5 microns to 2 millimeters; have drug loading up to 95% by volume; and can be sterilized. Drug release may be gradual or may be triggered by changes in pH or temperature. Water-soluble drugs may be incorporated into the core in emulsified form. If the drug is easily denatured, the core solvent may be selected from a number of non-denaturing organic solvents. [more] RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS
457AG1 - Gel
Electrophoresis Cassette. The
cassette provides an alternative to the Cambrex FlashGelä
and Invitrogen E-Gelä
self-contained DNA separation systems. The
cassette may be licensed in two configurations: (1) self-contained, with the
separation buffer inside (non-exclusive license only); or (2) for use in a
system, without the separation buffer inside (exclusive or non-exlusive
license). The system [Ref.
No. 457AG] automatically supplies and removes buffers and other solutions
(e.g., for rinsing and staining), and controls the application and removal of
the separation voltage. 457AG - Automated System for High-Throughput 2D Electrophoresis. The system is based on the automated supply and removal of buffers and other solutions to/from a cassette, as well as the controlled application of electric voltages. Large numbers of separations can be performed simultaneously as well as sequentially. With PVD membrane substrates, the system is particularly useful for 2D protein separations. It switches from first to second dimension without the need for human intervention, automatically changing buffers and rotating the electric field. [more] 456FC - High-Speed, High-Resolution 2-D Electrophoretic Separation of Proteins on Membrane Substrates. The separation is carried out in less than 20 minutes, using high protein-binding membranes such as PVDF or nylon as substrates. The separation in both dimensions is performed on the same membrane, which just has to be rotated in the electric field after a buffer change. Since the separation is carried out directly on a protein-binding membrane, any subsequent immunodetection can be performed directly on that membrane. The separation is carried out under non-denaturing conditions, thus preserving enzymatic activities, protein-protein interactions, protein-ligand interactions, etc. Also, due to the organic solvent buffers used, both hydrophobic and hydrophilic proteins can be separated. [more] 346PR - Polyclonal Antibodies to Apoptosis Associated Tyrosine Kinase. Little is known about genes that influence apoptosis during hematopoiesis. Temple scientists have identified a novel gene named AATYK (Apoptosis Associated Tyrosine Kinase) and found that its expression is dramatically upregulated during the apoptosis of myeloid precursor cells. AATYK-specific antiserum is available for licensing for research purposes only. 332SK - Human Astrocytoma Cell Line that Stably Expresses the P2Y1 Receptor. The P2Y1 receptor is an ADP platelet receptor coupled to the activation of phospholipase C. The P2Y1 receptor mediates ADP-induced platelet shape change and aggregation. It has been shown that ADP-induced platelet aggregation can be inhibited by blocking this receptor. 300LC - Hamster Cell Line that Expresses the Human Brain Kappa Opioid Receptor. An expression vector containing the cDNA that encodes for the human Kappa opioid receptor displays binding characteristics expected of a Kappa opioid receptor. [more] 282PR - A-myb Knockout Mouse as an Animal Model for Male Infertility and Breast Cancer. The A-myb gene plays a critical role in male germ cell differentiation and in mammary gland development during pregnancy. Male A-myb knockout mice are infertile because spermatogenesis is blocked and are thus suitable as animal models for male infertility. Since breast tumor cells overproduce A-myb protein and require it for their proliferative function, blocking the production of this protein may become an important approach to the treatment of breast cancer, and the A-myb knockout mouse can be an animal model for these studies. [more] 056AS - Monoclonal Antibodies to Kininogen. Hybridomas have been prepared that provide cell lines for the production of monoclonal antibodies which specifically bind to an antigenic determinant of the plasma kininogens. These antibodies can be used to assay high molecular weight kininogen and total kininogen in plasma, and thus monitor quantitatively certain pathogenic states and hereditary disorders. Competitive ELISA assays have been developed to measure plasma kininogens. [more] THERAPEUTIC443RF - Treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome. Oral doses of ketamine, far lower than those previously used in the treatment of pain, were found to improve very significantly the limb sensations, motor restlessness and insomnia associated with RLS. The effective dose ranges from 2 mg/day to 100 mg/day, depending on the patient and the severity of the symptoms. In some cases, absence of all RLS symptoms persists for varying periods of time even after treatment is stopped. [more] 384CF - Recombinant Hemoglobin Polymers for Use in Blood Substitutes. The invention provides for a recombinant mutant hemoglobin which forms homogeneous polymers through disulfide bonds in a controlled fashion without interference from spurious bonds during refolding and polymerization. [more] 371RC - Inhibition of Angiogenesis by Monoclonal Antibodies to Domain 5 of High Molecular Weight Kininogen. A monoclonal antibody to Domain 5 of high molecular weight kininogen has been shown to inhibit endothelial cell migration and proliferation in vitro and to inhibit angiogenesis in vivo in a chicken chorioallantoic membrane model. More recently, this antibody has also been shown to inhibit human tumor growth in a xenograft model. [more] 363MA - IRT-1: A Novel Factor Inhibits Proliferation of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells. Temple researchers have identified and characterized Interferon-Responsive Transcript-1 (IRT-1), a novel mRNA transcript expressed in human VSMCs only when they are stimulated with IFN-gamma. IRT-1 mRNA expression has also been shown to occur in balloon angioplasty-injured rat carotid arteries. Overexpression of IRT-1 protein in VSMCs alters their morphology and dramatically reduces their proliferative capacity. It has been suggested that IRT-1 may represent an IFN-gamma-inducible gene regulatory factor and may regulate the progression of vascular proliferative diseases. [more]
360RC - Inhibition of Angiogenesis by Peptides Derived from Domain 5 of High Molecular Weight
Kininogen.
The invention is based upon the discovery that domain 5 (D5) of high molecular weight kininogen and certain D5-derived peptides inhibit endothelial cell migration and proliferation in vitro and angiogenesis in vivo.
Anti-angiogenic therapy is a desirable goal for the treatment of diseases critically dependent on new blood vessel formation. [more] 239TS1 - Microencapsulation of Vaccines. The all-aqueous delivery system of Ref. No. 239TS has been used extensively for the delivery of vaccines based on live viruses or viral antigens. In addition to the expected sustained release (which eliminates the need for booster shots), two unexpected benefits have been observed: Significant enhancement of the immunogenic response (up to 5,000-fold) and, in suckling neonates, protection of the vaccine against neutralizing antibodies in the mother's milk. [more] 197RP - Amphotericin B Compositions with Enhanced Antifungal Activity. These compositions rely on the strong synergism between amphotericin B and a second antifungal agent. For example, the minimum inhibitory concentration for amphotericin B in these compositions is reduced as much as 48-fold for Cryptococcus neoformans and as much as 64-fold for Candida albicans. 177WB - Genetically Engineered Human Hemoglobin Variants. The human hemoglobin variants of the invention result from modifications of the chloride binding site. These modifications give the variants the low oxygen affinity required for blood substitute applications, in which the hemoglobin does not reside inside red blood cells. 175TS - Perfluorocarbon-Based Blood Substitute. The invention provides for a perfluorocarbon-based blood substitute which is stable at room temperature for at least several months, and thus dispenses with the low temperature refrigeration required by the current technology. [more] 147BC - Antisense Oligonucleotides to the c-kit Proto-Oncogene. The invention provides a composition of matter and a method for treating diseases characterized by erythrocyte overproduction (such as polycythemia), hematologic malignancies (such as acute myelogenous leukemia, acute lymphatic leukemia and chronic myelogenous leukemia), malignant melanoma, and breast and lung carcinomas. [more] DEFENSE486JM - Neutron Camera for Locating Fissile Nuclear Materials. The camera detects fissile nuclear materials by their signature neutron emissions. An alternative, detection of gamma radiation, is impractical because gamma rays from fissile materials have low energies and are readily absorbed by even modest shielding. The camera is unique in that it provides the location of the neutron source, and is thus particularly useful in open environments such as warehouses or cargo holds. [more] 412DD - Molecular Biosensors Based on Cloned Olfactory Receptors. A yeast cell line was transformed with components of the cAMP signal transduction pathway associated with a rat olfactory receptor. Then the yeast cell line was transfected with a signal reporter and an expression vector containing the hypervariable region of a rat olfactory receptor. This biosensor was able to detect different concentrations of an olfactant. The specificity of the biosensor was also demonstrated. It is possible to construct a library of biosensors of different specificities, which will then be screened for the ability of individual biosensors to detect odorant molecules, such as drugs, explosives and chemical warfare agents. [more] 513RT - Reduction of Crude Oil Viscosity by Electric Field Application. Electric fields, applied for only a few seconds, improve the flow of petroleum-based fluids through a reduction in both oil viscosity and deposit formation. The reduction can be greater than 20% and remain above 10% for up to an hour. This means that the field needs to be reapplied only every few miles along the pipeline. [more] ENGINNERING417RT - Pressure-Induced Increase and Modulation of the Yield Shear Stress of Electrorheological Fluids. The yield shear stress of ER fluids is increased very substantially through the application of pressure following the application of an electric field. Yield shear stresses up to 200 kPa (a 40-fold increase) have been obtained with applied pressures up to 850 kPa. The yield shear stress increase is roughly proportional to the pressure, thus allowing pressure to replace ( or complement) electric field strength as a means of modulating the yield shear stress of ER fluids. As a result of the high yield shear stresses that can be obtained, this method has the potential for bringing the efficiency and agility of ER devices for the first time into the realm of industrial applications. [more] 277JC - Monolithic Single-Composition Thermocouples. The thermocouples of the invention are based on a novel single-composition thermocouple technology. This technology does not require junction fabrication: The thermocouple consists of a single piece of wire or ribbon of uniform chemical composition, with one section in one structural phase (for example, amorphous) and the remainder in a different structural phase (for example, microcrystalline). Thermocouples made according to the invention can be made as thin as 1-2 m in diameter and a few millimeters in thickness, possess highly reproducible characteristics, have shorter response time than that of the thinnest commercially available thermocouples, and can be extremely strong enabling their simultaneous use as structural elements. [more] 165ML - Liquid Crystal Time-Temperature Cumulative Indicator. The indicator consists of a small polymer capsule enclosing a liquid crystalline solution of a first reactant and microcapsules containing a second reactant. Breaking the microcapsules by pressure triggers a reaction which disturbs the pitch of the liquid crystal and leads to a gradual color change from deep blue to deep red. Because the reaction is both time and temperature dependent, the indicator can provide accurate monitoring of the shelf life of a packaged product. The indicator can be incorporated into a bar code to be sensed by inventory control equipment. [more] ENVIRONMENTAL438FC - Methods for Rapid Detection of Cockroach Allergen Levels. The concentration of certain molecular species was found to be directly proportional to total cockroach allergen levels in dust samples. One colorimetric method uses a simple test kit for use on location, and provides a quick, rough estimate of the total allergen level. Other methods use inexpensive colorimeters or fluorimeters, routinely available in most testing laboratories, and provides a more precise quantitative determination. [more] 398DS - Method for Limiting Acid Mine Drainage. The method reduces acid mine drainage (AMD) by passivating the metal sulfides that are present in coal mine waste. This is done by spraying water emulsions of certain bilayer-forming lipids. Bilayers form over exposed metal sulfides and exclude environmental water, which is the main cause of AMD. Preliminary results show that this method suppresses metal sulfide oxidation by as much as 80%. Impure lipid fractions (from cells grown by fermentation) can be used, so that the cost of goods is minimal. [more] 129ML1 - Disposal of PCBs and Other Cyclic Aromatics. The invention provides for an entirely new, environmentally safe, method for the pyrolysis of cyclic aromatic hydrocarated benzene derivative yielded 41% graphite, 11% napthalene, and 2% residual tars, in addition to HCl; no trace of chlorine could be detected in the solids. The method is readily adapted to the treatment of contaminated soils. [more] INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY525LB - Secret Sharing Technique With Low Transmission Overhead. TThe technique of the invention converts a secret into: (a) n private shares that are sent to different recipients and (b) a public share sent in the open. Redundancy is achieved because k < n private shares plus the public share are sufficient to reconstitute the secret. Secrecy is maintained because fewer than k private shares cannot provide any information about the secret. Unlike prior secret sharing techniques, the present one has negligible overhead for large secrets. [more] 141TM - Visualization and Analysis of Multi-Variate Data. An entirely new method of graphing multi-variate data allows the interactive visualization and analysis of very large data sets in real time. The method is based on a novel mapping an N-dimensional lattice representing the independent variable space onto a hierarchical one-dimensional lattice. MATERIALS 129ML - Graphite Flakes and Film. Graphite flakes and film are formed by low temperature pyrolysis of benzene, pyrazine and naphthalene vapors. They are highly reflective, with a silvery or silver-black appearance, and electrically conductive. The flakes can be used not only in conventional applications of carbon fillers, but also wherever appearance (high luster paints and surface coatings) or conductive properties (conductive floorings and EMI shielding materials) are important. 239TS1 - Microencapsulation of Vaccines.
