and Methods for the Treatment of DNA Hypomethylation Related
Disorders. The present
invention provides compositions and methods for the treatment of conditions
or diseases caused by loss of the DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1) enzyme.
These conditions include cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative
disease, embryonic developmental disorders, and other conditions caused
or exacerbated by DNA hypomethylation. [more] 551AT - Effect of TULA on the Production of Pseudotyped HIV-1-based Lentiviruses.TULA proteins were shown to exert a negative effect on HIV-1 replication, interfering with the late steps of HIV-1 life cycle. The effect of TULA on HIV-1 is dependent on its UBA domain, which is likely to act by disrupting critical ubiquitylation-mediated steps of HIV-1 biogenesis. Therefore, TULA, its UBA and peptides mimicking them may be used for treating retroviral infections, particularly those with HIV, and associated diseases, including AIDS. [more] 525LB - Secret Sharing Technique With Low Transmission Overhead. The technique of the invention converts a secret into: (a) n private shares that are sent to different recipients and (b) a public share sent in the open. Redundancy is achieved because k < n private shares plus the public share are sufficient to reconstitute the secret. Secrecy is maintained because fewer than k private shares cannot provide any information about the secret. Unlike prior secret sharing techniques, the present one has negligible overhead for large secrets. [more] 513RT
- Reduction of Crude Oil Viscosity by Electric Field Application.
Electric fields, applied for only a few seconds, improve the flow of
petroleum-based fluids through a reduction in both oil viscosity and deposit
formation. The reduction can be
greater than 20% and remain above 10% for up to an hour.
This means that the field needs to be reapplied only every few miles
along the pipeline. [more] 491DB - Interproximal Cavitation Detection Device and Method. The invention is a disposable, single-use tape for detecting cavitated lesions on the interproximal surfaces between teeth. On the side of the tape that contacts the suspect tooth surface is a layer of an impressionable material. When the tape is pulled against the suspect tooth surface, an impression of that surface is formed, including any cavitation. [more] 486JM - Neutron Camera for Locating Fissile Nuclear Materials. The camera detects fissile nuclear materials by their signature neutron emissions. An alternative, detection of gamma radiation, is impractical because gamma rays from fissile materials have low energies and are readily absorbed by even modest shielding. The camera is unique in that it provides the location of the neutron source, and is thus particularly useful in open environments such as warehouses or cargo holds. [more] 457AG1 - Gel Electrophoresis Cassette. The cassette provides an alternative to the Cambrex FlashGelä and Invitrogen E-Gelä self-contained DNA separation systems. The cassette may be licensed in two configurations: (1) self-contained, with the separation buffer inside (non-exclusive license only); or (2) for use in a system, without the separation buffer inside (exclusive or non-exlusive license). The system [Ref. No. 457AG] automatically supplies and removes buffers and other solutions (e.g., for rinsing and staining), and controls the application and removal of the separation voltage. 457AG - Automated System for High-Throughput 2D Electrophoresis. The system is based on the automated supply and removal of buffers and other solutions to/from a cassette, as well as the controlled application of electric voltages. Large numbers of separations can be performed simultaneously as well as sequentially. With PVD membrane substrates, the system is particularly useful for 2D protein separations. It switches from first to second dimension without the need for human intervention, automatically changing buffers and rotating the electric field. [more] 456FC - High-Speed, High-Resolution 2-D Electrophoretic Separation of Proteins on Membrane Substrates. The separation is carried out in less than 20 minutes, using high protein-binding membranes such as PVDF or nylon as substrates. The separation in both dimensions is performed on the same membrane, which just has to be rotated in the electric field after a buffer change. Since the separation is carried out directly on a protein-binding membrane, any subsequent immunodetection can be performed directly on that membrane. The separation is carried out under non-denaturing conditions, thus preserving enzymatic activities, protein-protein interactions, protein-ligand interactions, etc. Also, due to the organic solvent buffers used, both hydrophobic and hydrophilic proteins can be separated. [more] 443RF - Treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome. Oral doses of ketamine, far lower than those previously used in the treatment of pain, were found to improve very significantly the limb sensations, motor restlessness and insomnia associated with RLS. The effective dose ranges from 2 mg/day to 100 mg/day, depending on the patient and the severity of the symptoms. In some cases, absence of all RLS symptoms persists for varying periods of time even after treatment is stopped. [more] 438FC - Methods for Rapid Detection of Cockroach Allergen Levels. The concentration of certain molecular species was found to be directly proportional to total cockroach allergen levels in dust samples. One colorimetric method uses a simple test kit for use on location, and provides a quick, rough estimate of the total allergen level. Other methods use inexpensive colorimeters or fluorimeters, routinely available in most testing laboratories, and provides a more precise quantitative determination. [more] 417RT - Pressure-Induced Increase and Modulation of the Yield Shear Stress of Electrorheological Fluids. The yield shear stress of ER fluids is increased very substantially through the application of pressure following the application of an electric field. Yield shear stresses up to 200 kPa (a 40-fold increase) have been obtained with applied pressures up to 850 kPa. The yield shear stress increase is roughly proportional to the pressure, thus allowing pressure to replace (or complement) electric field strength as a means of modulating the yield shear stress of ER fluids. As a result of the high yield shear stresses that can be obtained, this method has the potential for bringing the efficiency and agility of ER devices for the first time into the realm of industrial applications. [more] 412DD - Molecular Biosensors Based on Cloned Olfactory Receptors. A yeast cell line was transformed with components of the cAMP signal transduction pathway associated with a rat olfactory receptor. Then the yeast cell line was transfected with a signal reporter and an expression vector containing the hypervariable region of a rat olfactory receptor. This biosensor was able to detect different concentrations of an olfactant. The specificity of the biosensor was also demonstrated. It is possible to construct a library of biosensors of different specificities, which will then be screened for the ability of individual biosensors to detect odorant molecules, such as drugs, explosives and chemical warfare agents.
