Temple encourages the formation of new companies dedicated to the commercialization of Temple patents, and will accept equity in lieu of licensing fees, running royalties or patent costs.  The following currently operating companies were formed around licensed Temple patents (* indicates a Temple equity position):

Obesity Solutions, Inc.* was formed to commercialize endoscopic procedures for the treatment of obesity, developed by Dr. Larry Miller (Gastroenterology Section, Internal Medicine Department, School of Medicine).  These outpatient procedures delay stomach emptying and thus prolong the sensation of fullness.  This is achieved by narrowing the pyloric opening, through injection of a bulking agent into the pylorus or through suturing the pylorus.  The procedures are easily made reversible, since both the bulking agent and the sutures can be made resorbable, or the sutures can simply be cut endoscopically in a second procedure.  This is in contrast to the major surgery involved in stomach stapling.

Onconova Therapeutics Inc. was formed to commercialize a wide variety of anticancer and anti-inflammatory compounds, including a new class of COX-2 inhibitors, developed by Dr. E. Premkumar Reddy and his collaborators (Biochemistry Department and Fels Institute, School of Medicine). [company web site]

R.E.D. Laboratories NV* was formed to commercialize the discovery by Dr. Robert Suhadolnik and collaborators (Biochemistry Department and Fels Institute, School of Medicine) of an abnormal low molecular weight RNase L protein in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) patients.  Prior to this discovery there was no diagnostic test for CFS, and physicians had to rely solely on a combination of clinical symptoms, each of which can also be due to other disease conditions.
